Hi Reader, How’s your week going? I’m getting ready for the TED conference on AI in Vienna, and I’m excited to explore what senior leaders need to know about the AI revolution. But before I head off, did you hear about the new cat at Downing Street? The UK Prime Minister just got a new cat named Prince. But what about handsome Larry—Downing Street’s veteran, who’s survived six Prime Ministers? When a new leader steps in, they often bring their own people, building an inner circle. So, what’s Larry supposed to do when fresh faces (or paws) arrive with new leadership? Here’s my advice for Larry—and anyone in his shoes: 🔹 Stay visible. Don’t fade into the background. Keep showing your value by doing what you do best, whether it’s catching mice or solving big problems. 🔹 Adapt. New leadership brings new rules (and sometimes new pets). Be flexible. Show you can thrive in any environment—whether palace halls or corporate offices. 🔹 Leverage your experience. Larry, you’ve seen six leadership changes. That experience is priceless. Use it to guide the newcomers—whether they’re humans or kittens. Institutional knowledge is gold. 🔹 Build relationships. Instead of seeing the new arrival as competition, build a bond. Cozy up to Prince, or connect with the new team. Your experience can complement their energy. Legacy and experience carry real weight. What you’ve seen, done, and contributed is invaluable, Larry. We’re grateful for your service. How have you handled change when a new boss brings in their team? Your wing woman, P.S. I can’t wait to share what I learn about AI and leadership from Vienna in the coming weeks! |
